UK CCGs spending ten times more on private healthcare providers despite ‘underfunded’ NHS – 2018 figures reveal

After BMA contacted all 176 UK CCGs, 78 gave figures on healthcare spending over the last 3 years. The figures showed a staggering £21m spending increase on private providers between 2016/17 and 2018 but a much smaller increase of just £2m for NHS providers. These figures also revealed that South Yorkshire Doncaster’s Clinical Commissioning Group (CCG) spent £7,561,598 on mental health rehab facilities in 2017/18, with £4,712,772 spent on private beds. Also, Rotherham’s CCG spent £2,636,503 in 2017/18 on rehab facilities, with £790,147 of their budget spent on private care providers.
