NHS England has extended Capita’s primary care support services contract for three more years for £94m. Capita took over the Primary Care Support England contract in September 2015 in a seven-year deal worth £330m. It delivers on behalf of NHSE digital, logistical and support services for primary care practitioners, including GPs, dentists, pharmacists and opticians.
The contract has had a series of major problems and failures and a damming report in 2018 from the National Audit Office. This concluded neither “[NHSE] nor Capita fully understood the complexity and variation of the service being outsourced”, but acknowledged some of the issues had improved since the 2016 debacle.
