NHS England has estimated that over 50% NHS consultants do private work. These consultants get profit from surgery they perform in the private sector and this includes cancer treatment. There are concerns as to whether people are being offered appropriate treatment because of this. Fears follow the Ian Paterson case, where the breast cancer surgeon gave unnecessary private operations to 750 patients. He even told some of them they had cancer when they did not.
